Faces

While I am trying to use other subject matter more often, I cannot help returning to the human face again and again. I am drawn to it (no pun intended) and I love capturing it on canvas and paper.

That's all.

Me fascina y me gusta pintarla y dibujarla.

Esto es todo.

After the Rain

It was raining buckets yesterday, and I spent the day at home and went to bed early; it was really cosy to be indoors. The photo above is what I woke to this morning -the typical sunny morning after LOTS of rain; I love it. Everything is greener and healthier.
Incidentally, I have two seascapes called After the Rain (I & II):

I like quiet weekends that give me space to recharge, think about what my priorities should be, pamper myself and clean the house and stock up on food. I made a very loose plan for the next few weeks that involves lots of creating, exercise and getting my energy back.
My new obsession is bamboo textiles, at present in the form of yarn:
current crochet project -a lavender bag
proyecto de crochet -un bolsito de lavanda

Bamboo is soft, organic, sustainable, eco-friendly and lots of other things that make it a great choice for use in clothing over other textiles.
I'm off to babysit! Hope you are all having a great weekend!

More paintings

"...The paintings shown here form part of a series that employs female archetypes and fairy tale motifs in the context of the narrative of a life, its transformations and the multiple selves that inhabit it." (from my artist statement. I never know what to write...)

I am back to work (full-time for the next few weeks), and it feels good. It's true that we use our time much more wisely when we don't have a lot of spare time and when the day has some structure to it. It is half past seven, and I am not tired yet (a huge achievement for me)!
I haven't done any more painting since the exhibition (have run out of canvasses, too), but I am looking forward to doing some more for this particular series.

Exhibition and Gratitude

My body seems to have crashed. After being sick for over two weeks and a course of antibiotics I am now sporting a cold sore on my upper lip. Boo! Bad timing, as I have events to attend, which I will now have to cancel.
At least I was able to make our exhibition opening on Sunday (am exhibiting with a good friend of mine).

Here are two of the paintings:
Aquí están dos de mis cuadros:
The Seed
La semilla

When I Try To Speak
Cuando intento hablar

I may have taken these pictures when the paintings weren't finished yet (note to self: take pictures of the finished pieces).

I have to admit, I was feeling sorry for myself this morning (WHY ME? WHY NOW?), but it is important to keep things in perspective. A cold sore is annoying, but not life-threatening. Maybe my body is trying to tell me something, to slow down, to work on my anxiety problem, which seems to be the cause of my being sick so often.
And now I already feel much better (after talking to my little sister, who is far more sensible than I am-THANK YOU!).

So it's a good time to list what I'm grateful for:
-family and friends, always
-that this situation means I have lots of time to think about lots of things (I am being vague, I know!)
-that I managed to exhibit my work despite time pressures and being sick
-that for the first time in quite a while I am close to being and feeling organised
-my friend S, who in this age of digital photos takes the time to print out her pictures, get several copies and give them to the people who are in it (and who brought me food when I was sick)
-...and much more!

-logré a exponer mis cuadros, aunque estaba enferma y no tenía mucho tiempo

Lovely scents

This is day 11 of being sick (with tonsillitis). While I'm past the stay-in-bed achey-body phase, I am still too weak to go anywhere/walk further than from one room to another. So I've been working on the computer, re-organising my folders, sewing and reading.

I also made a list of aromatherapy blends, taken from an excellent little book by Judy Chapman:

Chapman, Judy: More Aromatherapy Recipes From Around The World,
Thorsons, Sydney 2001

Aromatherapy is an obsession of mine. I have a good few books on it and keep adding to my stock of essential oils. Essential oils can help with so many illnesses and conditions and are great in handmade beauty products. I always carry lavender oil in my bag (for calming down, and great dabbed on your temples when you have a headache) and regularly make facials and body scrubs using essential oils. But my main use of them is to burn them in an oil burner. I do that daily, without fail. I love trying out different combinations. The scents can really alter the atmosphere of the room and set the mood for the day.
This book lists over 400 blends for use in an oil burner. Here are some of my favourites so far (for each blend, add two drops of each oil to the water in the oil burner):

Rosemary, cypress and lavender -scents of the sea (I burned this today)

Sandalwood, clary sage and orange -celebrate the female, intuition, openness

Orange, rose and melissa -sensuality and passion

Rose, chamomile and sandalwood - to strengthen the heart chakra

Cinnamon, lavender and peppermint - for zest and energy

Lavender, ylang-ylang and cinnamon -to strengthen mental acuity and increase
inspiration

(She introduces each blend with a few words on what the inspiration behind it is and what it can be used for. I only summarised.)

Naranja, rosa y melisa - sensualidad y pasión

Recovering

"We don't have a language for the senses. Feelings are images, sensations are like musical sounds".

still not sure whether this is finished or not
aún no sé si está terminado

This is what happened after I banned my only cactus from the house (because I kept touching it accidentally -ouch!) -it seems to like the sun.
Yes, it has been very sunny in Ireland! No rain in sight.

Apologies for my long absence (if anybody is still reading this!). I have been sick. Again. And it's taking me quite a while to recover.
Even though my head hurts and it's probably not the best thing to do in that case, I have been reading a lot (rereading Anaïs Nin at the moment) to pass the hours. Also some painting. And lots of lying in the grass. So it hasn't been too bad.
Disculpad mi ausencia (si alguien todavía lee esto). He estado enferma otra vez, y tardo en recuperar.

Hello weekend!

I have been a bad blogger lately. It's been a busy week again, but hopefully I'll have more time next week. The brief stretches of spare time I have had I've been working on this:

I got this because her novel The Lover is one of the most beautifully written books I have read.
