The best things in life are free...

...and they include swimming in the sea at 7.45am on a beautiful October morning!

The beach when I arrived:
La playa cuando llegué:

...and when I came out of the water:
...y cuando salí del agua:

After the swim, I went for a 45-min jog/walk under blue skies, passing horses and ponies and donkeys.
All this is part of my effort to make the most of the fact that most days I don't start work until 12 noon. I would have preferred starting early and finishing early, as I don't seem to get much done in the morning (i.e. painting) when I have something on later. But now I am determined to adapt to this schedule. And there is something nice about walking through town at 10am when the shops are getting ready for the day and most people are at work; it's a different atmosphere to the afternoon- and weekend-madness (bonus: no queues in the shops).
Plus I had the beach all to myself this morning! :-)

DIY and dresses

Maybe I was too optimistic in the last post. I didn't quite manage to do what for a few blissful days seemed to work well, and ill health intervened once again. But since this blog is meant to be about good stuff, I won't dwell on my failures...
I'll be back to teaching next week, so I am using the weekend to get organised, drink wine and have fun. And go for walks. Just back from my second walk on the beach today!

Instead of working on the illustrations I'm supposed to be working on, I have been doing lots of DIY and crafts. I painted my coffee table antique white:

This picture looks gloomy, due to the fact that it is a grey day and I had to use the flash. It looks much nicer in real life!

Incidentally, I got a dress that matches my couch!

This week I am grateful for:
-my kind landlords, who not only reduced the rent, but have been generally very good to me
-my lovely home, the first place I feel at home in (apart from my family home, of course)
-good friends and a lovely time staying in
-that I am maybe finally getting my act together
-the beach!

Good days

That was a longer break than I had thought it would be. In the last month one of my sisters got married, the other engaged. We are getting old!
I've been back for two weeks now, but it took time to settle back in again. Caught the obligatory cold, despite my best efforts not to get sick. I am trying to sort.out.my.life. Really.

I know that I will feel content at the end of the day when that day has had a good balance of the following:
-exercise (outdoors)
-good, healthy food

-green tea, herbal teas and lots of water
-work

-ticking off things on my to-do lists

-art-making

-crafts

-reading

-being with people I love & keeping in touch with those who don't live here
-pottering around the house

-pampering myself
-deep breathing, yoga, meditation

-...

The last few days I have been mindful of this and tried to follow it as best as I could. And it's working -I have been going to bed feeling better, sleeping better and waking in a good mood. Those people who have listened to my crying and moaning only last week when I was depressed-and-frustrated-and-worried-about-the-future-and-everything would no doubt find that hard to believe, but I hope they will notice a change in me!

-
tareas domésticas
-mimarme
-respirar hondo, yoga, meditación
-
...

En estos últimos días he estado consciente de eso y lo he practicado. Y funciona -me he acostado sintiéndome mejor y durmiendo bien y me despierto de buen humor.

Holidays

a photo in my childhood room

Sorry for my long absence. Since I posted last I have been ill, caught up in work stuff and travelled to Germany, which is where I still am and will be for another few weeks. Since my computer is on its last legs and the internet connection here is dodgy and I don't want to spend my time waiting for pages to load while slowly going crazy, I mightn't be around much until mid-September. Hope you are all enjoying the end of the summer!

Disculpad que he estado ausente tanto tiempo.

Pink crochet

Did I say I was trying very hard not to get sick again? It didn't work. Maybe I was trying too hard. I have a kidney infection, which meant I was in pain for two days, then very sleepy the next day, and now I am fine, but weak (which I have been for the best part of the year).
At least the sun came out for 25 min (I know..), and I lay in the garden with blankets and a hot water bottle to get some vitamin D.
When I felt well enough to get out of bed, I decided to finish two crochet thingies that had been lying around for ages, a reminder of my lack of discipline. Since unfinished projects equal clutter and I hate clutter, I had to deal with this!

Quizás me estaba esforzando demasiado.

So here's the little lavender bag made of bamboo yarn I posted about before (my new favourite yarn; it's so soft):
It now hangs from my bed post, directly beside my head.

And this is a necklace that I finished despite the fact that I knew from the beginning it wouldn't work out...:

Because the doilies aren't flat, as they're supposed to be. I followed the instructions from a book, so it must be a mistake. The next time I'll just improvise.

(Ahhhh....I don't think I'll ever wear this... But maybe I can flatten it with the iron.)

P.S.: Oh, and I made this little guy a while ago (obviously not crochet). The fabric and pattern were a gift. I love him. He's the first thing I see when I open the door.

Painting and baking, two of my favourite grounding activities

On the easel:
It's the painting for my friend, who requested a version of a small painting I have in my house (this is the second time I am painting another version of it -might make a whole series). I started it this morning, and it still needs a lot of work. I'm not happy with the colours, had something else in mind. But I am glad I got started on it, as I thought it would be another unproductive lazy weekend this morning. That feeling dissipated as I began to paint.

Another thing that always lifts my mood is baking. It is so grounding, and it turns off all the chatter in my head. I made banana bread. This year I must have messed around with ten different recipes for banana bread. I make it so often because it's the best way to use up ripe bananas, in my opinion. This one isn't necessarily the best, but certainly one of the healthiest. I was off sugar for a few weeks recently and still try to consume as little of it as possible (she says after having devoured cake and cream in town today...), and I have noticed that the amount of sugar given in most recipes can easily be halved (or, of course replaced by honey).

This looks violent...

Spelt banana bread (heavily adapted from a recipe for banana cake by the Guardian's Dan Lepard):
-1 large egg
-55g brown sugar
-1-2 bananas, peeled, of course
-75ml grapeseed oil (or sunflower)
-75ml milk
-140g wholegrain spelt flour
-2 1/2 tsp baking powder
-1 tsp cinnamon
-dark chocolate chips (optional)
Preheat the oven to 180°C. Beat the egg, sugar and bananas until smooth and bubbly. Measure the oil and milk together in a jug, then beat into the batter mixture. Combine the flour, baking powder and cinnamon, then beat into the mix for two to three minutes, scraping down once. Stir in the chocolate chips. Spoon the batter into a 2 lb loaf tin (buttered and floured) and bake for 45 min. Let it cool, then dust with icing sugar. It tastes better the next day!

Irish Summer

This picture is just to remind myself that it hasn't been raining non-stop (of course my whole posture -look at my feet!- says "COLD AND WINDY", but never mind). This is where we have been having our lunch on the not wet days recently. I actually don't mind the rain, but in the summer it would be nice to get some... sun...occasionally.
In three weeks' time (or so) I am going home for three weeks (or so). This is when I freak out and think I have to get so many things done before I go (because visiting home always feels like an epic trip). As in all the things I had plenty of time to do between Christmas and the summer, but didn't, and so they have to be crammed into these few weeks. I won't bore you with all the details, but here are some of them (and just to make myself feel better, I shall include things that I have already done):

-get the car serviced. DONE! (I am guilty of avoiding going to the dentist and the doctor's and anything to do with the car. But it's such a relief to get these things done)
-finish a painting that my friend commissioned (read: did me the favour to commission because I am poor...)
-start work on the new project (it's to do with illustration, my new passion, which has been mainly happening in my head so far)
-get work stuff organised. DONE!
-organise my cupboards. DONE! I love decluttering.
-make sure I won't get sick again. PLEASE. So lots of bee pollen, propolis, vitamin C.

HECHO y HECHO
-asegurar que no me pongo enferma otra vez. POR FAVOR! Mucho polen, mucha vitamina C.
