Breathe.

"In order to let go of the addictive effort or commitment to stress that characterises our culture, we have to focus on one thing only: how we feel inside, the quality of our internal state. We have to focus on letting go of the tension response. We have to stop thinking so much about where we want to go and what we're going to accomplish. We also have to stop thinking about how other people see us and react to us, or about how we want to affect other people. We have to make our internal experience of ease and peace all-important.
We have to learn to make internal tranquility and relaxation the backdrop for anything we do in life." (Bacci, Ingrid,
The Art of Effortless Living, Bantam, London 2002, pp.107f.)

I believe that things come your way when you need them. It has happened to me too many times to be pure coincidence.
This book is one example. It appeared in my life a few months ago, and it was exactly what I needed. It contains advice that wasn't new to me as such, but reading it gave me the impetus to really start dealing with what is holding me back and draining me.
I do not have what would be considered a stressful life by any means. My work isn't stressful; I don't have children; I don't live in a big hectic city. Yet I often feel stressed and overwhelmed by the smallest things -by life itself. One reason for that is that I don't breathe properly a lot of the time. This book is about living "effortlessly", starting with your breath and letting go and being mindful in everything you do. And, paradoxically, by doing less we actually end up achieving more.
Whenever I become aware of my shallow breathing, I focus on my breath and relax my jaw and shoulders -when I do that I notice how tense I have been. It's as if a weight has been lifted and everything is much easier all of a sudden.

Pink!

I just uploaded these pictures and only noticed now that they all contain pink. There is a lot of pink in my life; I find it very uplifting (mmh, that's a topic for another post, on colours, which is long overdue).
It has been a good Monday. I went swimming, running and did yoga, and I found I actually craved exercise, instead of making myself do it.
I am trying to just enjoy every day and not "think in weeks" (i.e. wait for the weekend to come). And it's actually working (and so it should, considering my type of work and mostly flexible hours).
Y funciona.

On the weekend I did a little bit of painting:
El fin de semana pinté un poco:
(detail) I painted over a painting I wasn't happy with, creating layers and texture

I also started a new crochet project:
Empecé un nuevo proyecto de crochet:

I had friends over for dinner, and they brought this bunch of tulips. Springtime is here!
Vinieron amigos a cenar, y me trajeron estas flores. La primavera ha llegado!
I feel much more content these days. Which reminds me, it's high time to do another things-to-be-grateful-for list:

-receiving a beautiful Thank You card for something I had given the person as a Thank You for something she had given me!
-reconnecting with old friends
-spending time with a friend and her kids, who made beautiful drawings and brought such joy into my house.
-buying jasmine oil and natural scented soy candles - aromatherapy is great!
-living in a corner of the world that can be truly magical
-and much more...

Decluttering my mind

While I still haven't picked up the paintbrush, I am not constantly fretting about it, for a change. I do realise I need discipline, and that it's not a question of being in the right frame of mind, but rather of sitting down and getting started, but somehow I know and trust that I'll get to that point (is that a contradiction?).
The reason for this is that I am making small changes in different areas of my life, and it feels great. We are creatures of habit, and it is easy to get stuck in a rut. We are afraid of change, even if we know it is good for us. I tend to procrastinate, and it is draining. Instead of e-mailing people, I make lists of "people-I-must-e-mail". Even with texting: instead of sending the bloody text, I make a note of it (which probably takes longer than texting itself). I know, it's ridiculous.
I am very good at clearing material clutter, but other things that clutter my life (things that need to get done -most of them long overdue-, letters to be written, relationships, worries I don't address, etc.) tend to stick around forever.

But this is changing. I am dealing with my inbox and try to reply to e-mails within a week.
I go for a run when I'm at home and have half an hour, instead of thinking about how I don't do it enough and then reaching for the chocolate and feeling frustrated.
On my days off I try to stick to a (very loosely defined -it IS my time off, after all) schedule to ensure I don't just doss around all day.

One thing I just can't get myself to get sorted out is my car -it needs to get serviced, among other things. This is the part of me that is still a child and thinks anything to do with cars has to be dealt with by adults (men). Or I simply dread the bills.

Today is another beautiful day -it smells of spring. I went down to the beach and cleansed my crystals with sea water:

This parcel is on its way to my sister (a late birthday present -must work on that, too...):

Hope you all have a great weekend!

A Thoughtful Spot

My sister's fiancé gave me a lovely book of Winnie-the-Pooh wisdom (one of my favourite children's books), and it has now been given a prominent place on my kitchen counter, in a book-holder-thingy, with a new double page displayed every morning (in addition to consulting my angel cards -I love these little rituals; it is nice to blindly pick a card and let the word or phrase inspire and guide you).
This is what came up this morning (my angel card was "openness", a card I never got before -I always seem to get one of the same 10 cards out of a set of 60 or so... So maybe this IS a new start):
So Pooh and Piglet meet at their thoughtful spot and wonder what they are going to do and then end up doing nothing -sounds familiar. My thoughtful spot used to be a rock in the sea, but seeing how it has been freezing cold and sitting on it would only result in cystitis, I haven't been there this year...
So my thoughtful spot for the moment is this (well, I have moved on from the bed -maybe the hibernation is over):
I went for a 2-hours-15-minutes walk with my neighbour yesterday morning and felt so good afterwards. Unfortunately, today I am quite the opposite -I can't motivate myself to leave the house, even though it is a beautiful day. So instead I am indoors, contemplating yoga.
I decluttered my wardrobe and have decided I will wear more dresses -I love them, and it's the easiest way to dress, and I am not a trousers person. I don't own a single pair of jeans. Yes, I was born in the wrong century.

Hello from my bed

Ok, so it took me a bit longer than I thought. I'm sorry. Not sure whether there is anybody out there reading this after my long absence...
I can't believe almost two months of 2010 have passed already. Needless to say, I didn't manage to stick to any of my New Year's Resolutions (actually, I didn't really make any), and I continue to marvel at the speed of time flying by while I do nothing.
But, in my defense, I have been very busy at work, for a change, and of course the fact that I came back to a flooded house hasn't exactly helped. I got over the damage it caused rather quickly - it does feel like a new start (not that I have started anything so far...), and the house has received a bit of a makeover. I also decluttered some more (one of my favourite activities -I know, it's sad). I love the feeling of unburdening it creates, though I'm still waiting for the ultimate aim, the burst of energy it is supposed to trigger....
I am also still hibernating. Obviously.
Y sigo hibernar.

my bed, new pink walls, a great book given to me by a dear friend
But the days are getting longer. While all my big plans have been put on hold, I am trying to make little changes to get out of the rut. One is to try something new every day. Not necessarily crazy, adventurous stuff. Just small things. Like making chai tea from scratch (takes more time than pouring hot water over a teabag, but it's infinitely more satisfying).

ok, this photo isn't selling it very well...
aunque esta foto no lo vende bien...

And meeting people in the evenings instead of going home and to bed at 7.30pm.

While at home for Christmas, I stocked up on yarn for projects that, ahem, haven't really materialised yet (that was when 2010 seemed like a blank canvas for endless possibilities).

Yes, I like pink. And yes, two pictures of my bed. It's my favourite place.
I hope this blog will return to life and that I will have more to say than just moaning about how I get nothing done. I am very grateful that there are people out there who have visited here, and I hope you'll be back! I am catching up with reading and commenting on your blogs. Thanks for your comments on my last posts.
Voy a volver a leer vuestros blogs y a comentar.

BACK SOON - Volveré pronto!

It's three weeks since I last posted something here. And I'm afraid I can't write much now either. My flight back to Ireland was cancelled, so I got back later than planned, and between the flooded house and a crazy busy time at work there's no time for blogland. Things should quieten down next week, so hopefully I'll be back here then. I look forward to catching up on reading all your blogs. Please bear with me. Apologies, and thank you for your patience!

Hace tres semanas que no he escrito nada aquí, y ahora tampoco puedo escribir mucho. No me dejéis! Disculpad, y gracias por vuestra paciencia.

Not the best start...

Sorry for the long silence. Happy New Year to all of you, and I hope you had a nice Christmas.

A few days ago, just when I thought things could only get better, I got a phone call from my neighbour in Ireland telling me my house was flooded.
When I wrote in a recent post that my house was in a bad state, I didn't know it was getting so much worse. It is so ironic, because a few weeks ago, when parts of Ireland were flooded, I was so glad that my house was on a hill and wouldn't be affected... But of course there are so many ways in which water can get into a house. In my case a burst pipe and tank.

Most of my artwork is ruined, and lots of other things. A friend of mine went in to fetch some wet clothes to dry them and took photos... He says it's freezing cold and damp, which means that now all the things that didn't get wet, for instance my books, are getting damp due to the moisture in the air.

I know it's not the end of the world, and nobody got hurt, but when you're down already, things like that affect you more.
I try not to be attached to material things, but my paintings and drawings and books and photographs and writings are not just that.
My home is my sanctuary, and now it has been violated. And there'll be people going through my things in my absence -I don't like that idea either.

Sorry, I just had to vent that.
Maybe it means a new start.
