New housemates...

Not of the human variety....
Tengo nuevos compañeros de piso... pero no son humanos:

 

This purple lady, made by my older sister, is now sharing a shelf in my bookcase with her (not handmade, but also a gift from my sister) boyfriend.They look very happy. I love the details -he carries a carrot with him (poking out of his pocket), and her dress has two different buttons, one heart-shaped. And it features polka dots!
La chica violeta, hecha por mi hermana mayor, ahora comparte un estante en mi librería con su novio (él no está hecho a mano, pero también un regalo de mi hermana). Están muy contentos. Me encantan los detalles -él lleva una zanahoria en el bolsillo, y el vestido de ella tiene dos botones diferentes, uno en forma de un corazón.

And this guy was created by my younger sister. He normally lives on the couch, but for our photo-shoot I moved him to a brighter spot. So cute.
Y este chico fue creado por mi hermana menor. Normalmente vive en el sofá, pero para nuestra sesión de fotos le moví a un lugar más iluminado. Es muy mono.

Quark!

I never thought I'd be able to make German cheesecake here in Ireland, because the main ingredient -quark- was never available here. But this has changed:
Nunca había hecho esta tarta alemana en Irlanda, ya que no se podía comprar quark -un queso blanco fresco- aquí. Pero esto ha cambiado:
 

This being rip-off Ireland and the quark imported from Bavaria, a 250g tub is almost 3 euro (if I remember correctly, in Germany you can get 500g for less than a euro), so making a cheesecake that requires a kilo of the stuff is a luxury. Since I had only bought one tub -before I searched for a recipe-, I made a small cake.
What's great about this recipe is that it doesn't involve any pudding/custard powder stuff, like so many of the newer cheesecake recipes.
 Ya que todo es muy caro aquí y el quark importado desde Bavaria, cuesta casi tres euros para 250g (en Alemania es menos de un euro para 500g), así que hacer la tarta (con un kilo de quark) es un lujo. Sólo había comprado una tarrina, así que hice una tarta pequeña.

Quark cake (slightly adapted from here -I used less sugar):
-250g flour
-1/2 tsp baking powder
-1 egg
-120g butter
-70g sugar
-pinch of salt
Combine the above ingredients in a bowl and mix by hand, kneading into a smooth dough. Roll out and spread in a round baking tin, pulling up the edges for the crust.

For the filling:
-1kg quark
-90g flour
-170g sugar (more if you like it sweeter -the original says 250g)
-4 large eggs
 -1/8 l milk
120g melted butter

Separate the eggs. Mix the quark, flour, sugar, yolks, milk and butter. Whisk the egg whites until peaks form and fold into the mixture. Pour onto the cake base in the baking tin.
Bake at 160 degrees Celsius for about an hour.

If I make it again, I will use spelt flour (wholegrain for the base) and maybe honey instead of sugar. For this one, I used brown sugar. I have only tried a tiny bit (waiting for my friend); it's yummy.

I am taking it easy at the moment (recovering from the flu), which translates as watching episode after episode of Mad Men, drinking gallons of tea and knitting fluffy things:

Three weeks later....

The busiest time of year (aka arts festival) is over and things are back to normal....almost. Our show went okish  well, and we made it onto Irish television (YES! My poodle dress had a 2-sec appearance on TG4!

) and university radio.
Las semanas más ocupadas del año (el festival de las artes) han pasado y estoy volviendo a mi vida normal. Nuestro show salió bastante bien, y emitieron un poco en la televisión irlandesa -qué bien que llevé mi vestido de caniches!


I really got into illustrating. Unfortunately, when that happened -after agonising over it for months-, it was just days before the show... I spent several blissful evenings drawing while listening to TED talks.
Al final disfruté mucho de hacer las ilustraciones -lástima que eso ocurrió sólo unos días antes del show... Pasé unas tardes dibujando mientras escuchaba conferencias de TED.

Rab (the writer and storyteller I worked with) put his poems on a blog, and I added my illustrations: click here. It's a work-in-progress. I also got four of the pictures framed for a group exhibition -I love the deep frames.

Now I am trying to get into healthy habits again (the last few weeks featured A LOT of chocolate, muesli for dinner, and no running at all) and start the next project.
Ahora estoy tratando de volver a comer bien y hacer footing (las últimas semanas había mucho chocolate, muesli para la cena y ningún deporte) y empezar un proyecto nuevo.

No time for hibernation

This is the busiest time of the year, work-wise, and I am preparing for another week. Just back from a classical music concert (one of the great things about working in the arts is free tickets!), which was a nice break from a day of working on things I need to get finished SOON.
En el trabajo siempre estamos muy ocupada a principios del año, y estoy preparando para otra semana. Hoy fui a un concierto de música clásica, una manera bonita de descansar un poco.

It is hard to get back into the swing of things in the middle of a harsh winter (thick icy fog today). But being so busy is energising. And the evenings are getting longer.
Es difícil volver al trabajo después de las navidades y durante un invierno duro (hoy hay niebla) , pero me da energía estar tan ocupada. Y las tardes se hacen más largas.

-Having things to look forward to: I got some new second-hand books (will start with the biography of Zelda Fitzgerald) and the late Lhasa de Sela's last album in the post. And my older sister and her husband are coming next weekend!
También llegaron por correo unos libros nuevos de segunda mano (voy a empezar con la biografía de Zelda Fitzgerald) y el último CD de Lhasa de Sela.Y van a venir mi hermana mayor y su marido el fin de semana!

Dress and Chairs

The angle here makes me look way too big for this room! My place does resemble a doll's house in some ways, but it's not this extreme!

El ángulo aquí me hace muy grande en relación a la casa. Mi casa se parece a una casa de muñecas en ciertos aspectos, pero no tanto! 

I love the sleeves, despite -or rather because of- their impracticality (I don't like practical clothes). The dress is still very short, and the hem curls up (although I used rib stitch), so I need to fix that somehow. But the cleavage problem solved itself.
Me encantan las mangas. El vestido todavía está muy corto y la costura se enrosca, así que tengo que arreglarla. Pero el escote salió bien al final.

The cushion covers for the chairs are not finished yet - I need to add zips or buttons to the backs. For the reverse I cut up two lavender-coloured pillowcases.

Dress in progress

I am working on a knit dress (cue overexposed shots):

This may be the biggest item I have ever knitted, and it was surpirisingly fast.
Of course my impatience was punished -I didn't have the right size needle (I used a 6 instead of an 8) and couldn't wait, so the dress is, well, shorter than intended. However, the cleavage cries for nipple tape (ok, or a top underneath).
Esto debe ser la cosa más grande que he tejido, y me sorprendió lo fácil y rápido que era.
El vestido acabó más corto que había pensado, y tiene un escote demasiado grande, así que será necesario llevar un top abajo.

It's a simple LBD. But it will have gorgeous, fanciful sleeves -they are long, wide, delicate mohair-silk affairs. I only just started on them and love the mesh:
Es un vestido negro sencillo. Pero tendrá mangas extravagantes -son de mohair y seda, largas y delicadas. Acabo de empezar tejerlas, y me encanta la malla:
