Giving myself credit

instant energy boost

No New Year's resolutions as such here, but I do like the idea of a fresh start, a blank canvas.
I tend to beat myself up for not doing enough, but we ought to give ourselves credit for the things we did do!
2010 was a quiet yet crazy year for me. To use the three horoscope categories (shouldn't there be more?), it was a year of bad health (but nothing life-threatening, thankfully), satisfying work -though far less painting than I would have liked-, and a turbulent love life. There were dramas, tears, frustration and low lows. But looking back I was more content than ever before, which I hope is a by-product of getting older and more serene, and there were so many beautiful moments. I enjoyed the rhythm of my life, living on my own, making my house a sanctuary, romance, nature. I swam in the sea. I went running more than any other year. I worked for two arts festivals and on several commissions and exhibited my work. I phoned home more often and connected with old friends. My sisters got married. I had great conversations with people dear to me. I fell asleep on the couch with two small children in my arms (not mine!). People showed extreme kindness. I made things with my hands. I wore red shoes. I read books I will treasure forever and books that helped me manage my anxiety and I started meditating again. I engaged all my senses. I became more mindful.

The most important intention for 2011: No negative self talk. I really need to work on that one. It may be at the root of my physical illnesses.

Another intention: Do things differently at least twice a week. While routines and rituals are nourishing for the soul, it is also important to shake things up now and again. More on that soon.

On a cold winter's night (ok, it's still autumn)...

...I return to this poor neglected blog.

The last three weeks I have been
Durante las últimas tres semanas he
-seeing things (see last post)
-visto cosas (ve la última entrada)
-making things:
-hecho cosas:
After the coffee table, I painted my chairs (my landlady's, with her permission) antique white. Then I made cushion covers for them (and I never ironed the fabric, as this photo demonstrates beautifully...). I am very pleased with the result.

-eating. Mostly baby food (i.e. mashed everything) and green food, to satisfy a surely important craving (spinach, kale, wild garlic) and chocolate (another craving). And drinking red wine almost daily...
-comido.

-hibernating.
-hibernado.

My tiny house looks very cosy (and blurry!):
Mi casita es muy acogedor (y borrosa):
The cold means some lovely skies (note the proliferation of sky photos on this blog; it may have to do with 1.the fact that I never take my camera anywhere, so just take pictures of and around my house, and 2. the fact that I never go anywhere...):

That skeleton of a house in the corner has featured here before, when it was still a thatched house, but it burned down recently. I was very upset (for the people who lived there, and also because this is the view from my house, and perhaps also because I had unrealistic dreams of owning it one day...). I hope they are not going to build some massive new house in its stead.

I Can See Clearly Now

Literally.
So for 16 years or so I refused to wear my glasses (despite being extremely short-sighted) unless I was driving or really needed to be able to see something (I also kept my first pair of glasses for 11 years, even though they were for an 11-year-old girl). The reasons for this are multiple and personal and hard to fathom, ranging from "I don't like having something on my face" to that something falling off my face when I bent my head, but my main reason (or so I thought) was always that I liked seeing the world as a blur -soft, unthreatening. Quite a few artists are short-sighted, and I read somewhere that it helps seeing things in a more abstract way. Or something. Anyway, it seemed to help my argument.

What only hit me very recently* was that all that was BS and created too many problems, for example:

1) people thinking I was rude because I didn't wave at them
2)waving and smiling at strangers in case they were someone I knew, to avoid 1). (Actually, this isn't so bad; I'm sure people appreciate it)
3) feeling lost, frazzled and self-conscious, because I couldn't see the world around me, but said world could see me
4) shopping for things took longer, because I had to go up close to everything to make out what it was
5) missing out on lots of beautiful sights

All self-inflicted.
Now I am wearing contact lenses, and it.is.great. I cannot believe the difference. I feel more secure. I don't strain my eyes. I can read text from a distance. I can see people's faces...
Gosh, I am so good at making my life more complicated. Here's hoping that in other areas it won't take me 16 years to cop on. And that this seeing clearly thing will also manifest on a more metaphorical level (badly needed).

*of course, I never listened to anybody telling me this...and of course I was aware of it, but I needed a eureka moment.

Puedo ver bien finalmente.

5) me perdía muchas vistas bonitas

The best things in life are free...

...and they include swimming in the sea at 7.45am on a beautiful October morning!

The beach when I arrived:
La playa cuando llegué:

...and when I came out of the water:
...y cuando salí del agua:

After the swim, I went for a 45-min jog/walk under blue skies, passing horses and ponies and donkeys.
All this is part of my effort to make the most of the fact that most days I don't start work until 12 noon. I would have preferred starting early and finishing early, as I don't seem to get much done in the morning (i.e. painting) when I have something on later. But now I am determined to adapt to this schedule. And there is something nice about walking through town at 10am when the shops are getting ready for the day and most people are at work; it's a different atmosphere to the afternoon- and weekend-madness (bonus: no queues in the shops).
Plus I had the beach all to myself this morning! :-)

DIY and dresses

Maybe I was too optimistic in the last post. I didn't quite manage to do what for a few blissful days seemed to work well, and ill health intervened once again. But since this blog is meant to be about good stuff, I won't dwell on my failures...
I'll be back to teaching next week, so I am using the weekend to get organised, drink wine and have fun. And go for walks. Just back from my second walk on the beach today!

Instead of working on the illustrations I'm supposed to be working on, I have been doing lots of DIY and crafts. I painted my coffee table antique white:

This picture looks gloomy, due to the fact that it is a grey day and I had to use the flash. It looks much nicer in real life!

Incidentally, I got a dress that matches my couch!

This week I am grateful for:
-my kind landlords, who not only reduced the rent, but have been generally very good to me
-my lovely home, the first place I feel at home in (apart from my family home, of course)
-good friends and a lovely time staying in
-that I am maybe finally getting my act together
-the beach!

Good days

That was a longer break than I had thought it would be. In the last month one of my sisters got married, the other engaged. We are getting old!
I've been back for two weeks now, but it took time to settle back in again. Caught the obligatory cold, despite my best efforts not to get sick. I am trying to sort.out.my.life. Really.

I know that I will feel content at the end of the day when that day has had a good balance of the following:
-exercise (outdoors)
-good, healthy food

-green tea, herbal teas and lots of water
-work

-ticking off things on my to-do lists

-art-making

-crafts

-reading

-being with people I love & keeping in touch with those who don't live here
-pottering around the house

-pampering myself
-deep breathing, yoga, meditation

-...

The last few days I have been mindful of this and tried to follow it as best as I could. And it's working -I have been going to bed feeling better, sleeping better and waking in a good mood. Those people who have listened to my crying and moaning only last week when I was depressed-and-frustrated-and-worried-about-the-future-and-everything would no doubt find that hard to believe, but I hope they will notice a change in me!

-
tareas domésticas
-mimarme
-respirar hondo, yoga, meditación
-
...

En estos últimos días he estado consciente de eso y lo he practicado. Y funciona -me he acostado sintiéndome mejor y durmiendo bien y me despierto de buen humor.
