A Thoughtful Spot

My sister's fiancé gave me a lovely book of Winnie-the-Pooh wisdom (one of my favourite children's books), and it has now been given a prominent place on my kitchen counter, in a book-holder-thingy, with a new double page displayed every morning (in addition to consulting my angel cards -I love these little rituals; it is nice to blindly pick a card and let the word or phrase inspire and guide you).
This is what came up this morning (my angel card was "openness", a card I never got before -I always seem to get one of the same 10 cards out of a set of 60 or so... So maybe this IS a new start):
So Pooh and Piglet meet at their thoughtful spot and wonder what they are going to do and then end up doing nothing -sounds familiar. My thoughtful spot used to be a rock in the sea, but seeing how it has been freezing cold and sitting on it would only result in cystitis, I haven't been there this year...
So my thoughtful spot for the moment is this (well, I have moved on from the bed -maybe the hibernation is over):
I went for a 2-hours-15-minutes walk with my neighbour yesterday morning and felt so good afterwards. Unfortunately, today I am quite the opposite -I can't motivate myself to leave the house, even though it is a beautiful day. So instead I am indoors, contemplating yoga.
I decluttered my wardrobe and have decided I will wear more dresses -I love them, and it's the easiest way to dress, and I am not a trousers person. I don't own a single pair of jeans. Yes, I was born in the wrong century.

Hello from my bed

Ok, so it took me a bit longer than I thought. I'm sorry. Not sure whether there is anybody out there reading this after my long absence...
I can't believe almost two months of 2010 have passed already. Needless to say, I didn't manage to stick to any of my New Year's Resolutions (actually, I didn't really make any), and I continue to marvel at the speed of time flying by while I do nothing.
But, in my defense, I have been very busy at work, for a change, and of course the fact that I came back to a flooded house hasn't exactly helped. I got over the damage it caused rather quickly - it does feel like a new start (not that I have started anything so far...), and the house has received a bit of a makeover. I also decluttered some more (one of my favourite activities -I know, it's sad). I love the feeling of unburdening it creates, though I'm still waiting for the ultimate aim, the burst of energy it is supposed to trigger....
I am also still hibernating. Obviously.
Y sigo hibernar.

my bed, new pink walls, a great book given to me by a dear friend
But the days are getting longer. While all my big plans have been put on hold, I am trying to make little changes to get out of the rut. One is to try something new every day. Not necessarily crazy, adventurous stuff. Just small things. Like making chai tea from scratch (takes more time than pouring hot water over a teabag, but it's infinitely more satisfying).

ok, this photo isn't selling it very well...
aunque esta foto no lo vende bien...

And meeting people in the evenings instead of going home and to bed at 7.30pm.

While at home for Christmas, I stocked up on yarn for projects that, ahem, haven't really materialised yet (that was when 2010 seemed like a blank canvas for endless possibilities).

Yes, I like pink. And yes, two pictures of my bed. It's my favourite place.
I hope this blog will return to life and that I will have more to say than just moaning about how I get nothing done. I am very grateful that there are people out there who have visited here, and I hope you'll be back! I am catching up with reading and commenting on your blogs. Thanks for your comments on my last posts.
Voy a volver a leer vuestros blogs y a comentar.

BACK SOON - Volveré pronto!

It's three weeks since I last posted something here. And I'm afraid I can't write much now either. My flight back to Ireland was cancelled, so I got back later than planned, and between the flooded house and a crazy busy time at work there's no time for blogland. Things should quieten down next week, so hopefully I'll be back here then. I look forward to catching up on reading all your blogs. Please bear with me. Apologies, and thank you for your patience!

Hace tres semanas que no he escrito nada aquí, y ahora tampoco puedo escribir mucho. No me dejéis! Disculpad, y gracias por vuestra paciencia.

Not the best start...

Sorry for the long silence. Happy New Year to all of you, and I hope you had a nice Christmas.

A few days ago, just when I thought things could only get better, I got a phone call from my neighbour in Ireland telling me my house was flooded.
When I wrote in a recent post that my house was in a bad state, I didn't know it was getting so much worse. It is so ironic, because a few weeks ago, when parts of Ireland were flooded, I was so glad that my house was on a hill and wouldn't be affected... But of course there are so many ways in which water can get into a house. In my case a burst pipe and tank.

Most of my artwork is ruined, and lots of other things. A friend of mine went in to fetch some wet clothes to dry them and took photos... He says it's freezing cold and damp, which means that now all the things that didn't get wet, for instance my books, are getting damp due to the moisture in the air.

I know it's not the end of the world, and nobody got hurt, but when you're down already, things like that affect you more.
I try not to be attached to material things, but my paintings and drawings and books and photographs and writings are not just that.
My home is my sanctuary, and now it has been violated. And there'll be people going through my things in my absence -I don't like that idea either.

Sorry, I just had to vent that.
Maybe it means a new start.

some new (old) pictures

...very old, actually. The last one is just a bad photo of the previous painting, but I love how it turned out. I wish I had painted it like that. Blurred images have such a dream-like quality.

Home for Christmas

I wish I could say I have been extremely busy for the last few days, but that would be a lie. Although three days were taken up by travel -I flew home on Wednesday morning, preceded by a night bus and followed by a train journey to go to my sister's and then a drive to our family home. Seeing how I come home every Christmas and every summer (and sometimes in between), I should be well used to the journey, but somehow it still leaves me exhausted (I need two days' sleep afterwards to become a functioning human being once again). I don't travel well. I always consider it a miracle that I manage to get to my destination with all my belongings still with me.
There have been slight improvements: In the past, airports freaked me out; I would feel deeply alienated and miserable. Now I manage to imagine myself in a cocoon undisturbed by the haste and stress around me, and I have stopped imagining that everybody is watching me -yes, I'm paranoid (being short-sighted helps -the faces around me are a blur. Unfortunately I forget that my face isn't a blur to them; but I like living that illusion).

I remember last year around this time as if it were yesterday. I try very hard not to beat myself up for having wasted yet another year (which is what it feels like) and instead focus on the future....or, on the now, rather (nothing wrong with planning for the future, but I tend to project into the future and in the process not do anything to make my beautiful future life happen...)...

Trying to live by this:
"Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. I can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." -Melody Beattie

Right now, I am grateful for
-being with my family,
-being allowed to be a child again (maybe it's to do with the fact that I left home as a teenager: every time I come back here, I revert to being a child in some ways),
-the nice familiar feeling of my bed
-the pleasure of looking after this little monster while my sister and her boyfriend are away:
Emma the cat -in 2006?! (she's now five times as big)

-the fact that I am far away from my house in Ireland, which is falling apart (I suspect it wants me out. But my landlady has assured me they'll fix things during my absence). I have a history of houses acting up, from mice dying under floorboards to floorboards buckling up and strange noises...

In a bout of optimism, I packed my runners, but it's freezing cold outside, so I doubt they'll be put to use....

No viajo bien.

The only thing that keeps me sane sometimes...

The voice of the sea is seductive, never ceasing, whispering, clamoring, murmuring, inviting the soul to wander for a spell in abysses of solitude, to lose itself in mazes of inward contemplation.

from
The Awakening by Kate Chopin

...and our breathlessness as we run
to the beach endlessly,
as the sun creeps up on the sea.

"Lille" by Lisa Hannigan

...y jadeantes corremos
hacia la playa infinitamente,
mientras el sol se acerca al mar.
"Lille" de Lisa Hannigan, una cantante irlandesa. Esto no se traduce muy bien, disculpad.
